Ligustrum japonicum is an evergreen multi-trunk tree with an upright habit and large, dense crown. Leaves are enormous, up to 10 cm long, 6 cm wide, elliptic arcuate, leathery. The pink margins turn creamy-yellow in the spring.

Flowers are numerous and cover the leaves. They are tiny, creamy-white, fragrant, and grouped in a long pyramidal upright panicle from May to August.

Fruit is small, round, black when ripe and remains on the plant for many months.
